Tax update: Marriage allowance – allowing claims on behalf of deceased partners

The uptake of marriage allowance, which allows taxpayers to transfer up to 10 per cent of their unused personal allowance to their partner, reducing their tax bill by up to £230 a year in 2017-18, continues to be poor with only about half of the estimated four million eligible couples having claimed.

As announced in the Autumn Budget, the anomaly which prevented claims on behalf of deceased spouses and civil partners has now been removed with effect from 29 November 2017. These claims will be able to be backdated by up to 4 years.
