What it means

Marriage allowance allows you to transfer £1,060 of your personal allowance to your spouse or civil partner.

This means they will pay £212 less tax in the next tax year.

Their personal allowance will increase to £11,660 and yours will decrease to £9,540 (based on the standard 2015/16 personal allowance of £10,600).

This additional allowance will be applied in one of two ways:

  1. If they are self employed it will be dealt with then they send their self assessment return.

  2. If they pay tax through PAYE their tax code will be changed (usually to 1166M). This option can take up to two months.

Who is eligible

You are eligible if you fulfil both of the following criteria:

  1. You and your partner were born on or after 6 April 1935

  2. Your partner’s income is between £10,601 and £42,385
