Warning! Self assessment glitch causing confusion

An HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) computer error has seen many people who completed a self assessment tax return by the deadline of 31 January being wrongly told that they did not need to pay money in advance towards next year’s bill.

Taxpayers usually make two “payments on account”, one at the end of January and one at the end of July. However, the computer glitch has confused some people by wrongly telling them that no further money is owed.

Some people who paid anyway have received refunds, while others have been issued with payment demands.

If you received a payment on account refund from HMRC, we advise you not to bank the cheque. It is likely you will be hit with demands for the payment back. Rather contact your usual Beavis Morgan Partner for advice and assistance.
